How to get the best out of your ABCs

How to get the best out of your ABCs

Words by Carla Kim

It’s like that thing we all know, yet don’t know for sure. Vitamin definitely is something that we can’t live without, and it comes to a surprise that it has only been a century since we've known of its existence. Ever since its first discovery in 1911, vitamins have been in huge demand, and the beauty industry has not been an exception. From head to toe, we are in no short of our options for vitamin-infused products for healthy skin and hair. And this is where we come in - for today’s blog we’ll navigate through the 'what and how's on vitamin-infused beauty routines.

What is a vitamin?

In short, it’s a micronutrient essential to sustain our metabolism. Although small quantities are enough for proper functioning, either lack or excess of the nutrient can affect your health. A human being needs to consume 13 essential vitamins through food or supplement, and it’s advisable to keep an eye on your dietary plans because a lot of them cannot be self-sufficiently produced in our bodies.

Vitamin in our beauty routines

Then where exactly does vitamin come into our beauty routines? Vitamin is an essential element in the production and maintenance of our skin and hair. For anti-wrinkle, healthy nail and hair, blemish treatments and more, vitamin A,B,C are the most beloved solutions. The ABCs in Vitamin

  • Vitamin A - Retinol, a powerful anti-aging agent that stimulates skin cell's turnover rate and help increase collagen production, is made from Vitamin A.
  • Vitamin B - Biotin(Vitamin B7) and Panthenol(Vitamin B5) are the most popular choices.
Biotin can be spotted in hair products & products containing biotin may increase hair elasticity and reduce hair breakage. Panthenol may help your skin with building barriers against irritation and dryness, thus used in moisturizers.
  • Vitamin C - Vitamin C is a very potent antioxidant and most popularly used as skin-lightening and anti-aging ingredients in cosmetics.

Natural consumption

Simple yet effective - You eat them. Vitamin consumption through whole food is an optimal way for your body to absorb vitamin because vitamin can be absorbed more effectively when consumed together with other nutrients such as fatty acids and minerals in whole food. Different vitamins have their own 'optimal consumption', so check them out before your meals. For instance, boiling your carrot allows the body to extract more of vitamin A from the veggie than consuming it raw!

Supplements

The popular choice for both health and beauty by man - synthetic nutrient supplement intake is also a great way to provide your body with essential vitamins difficult to get from our dietary plans alone. Available in the form of a pill, power or liquid, multivitamins are easily available over the counter. You’ll find a whole range of different options according to your specific needs, gender, or daily routines, so take your pick!

Nutricosmetics and More

Vitamin-infused beauty products have been all the rage for a while now, and the industry is getting more and more sophisticated day by day. Now we can pick from an array of options for vitamin-infused products for specific body parts, purposes, and ingredients.

Especially for skincare, retinols(vitamin A) and Vitamin C are the most popular choices. A little tip - be mindful of not just of the percentage of vitamins in the product, but also how effective they can be absorbed. Higher percentage of vitamins does not equate higher efficiency. Compatibility with other products also matter. Vitamin A or C can irritate your skin when used excessively on their own, and for sensitive skin it is advised not to use products with exfoliating agents such as AHA and BHA at the same time. What's more? vitamin shots that inject vitamin directly into muscle or vein is another way to get vitamin in your system. Either Vitamin shots or IVs are supposed to help your skin glow and boost energy, and some celebrities are known to be a fan of such treatments.
