How’s your 2021 Resolution Going?

Here’s 5 beauty tips you might like to add on your list.

Words by Vanessa Han

How’s your 2021 going? We’re in for the new year for a few weeks now, so if you’ve drafted a new year’s resolution, now’s the perfect time to check how it's panning out. Since we’re not parting with masks yet, to-dos on personal care resolutions must be quite different for many of us. Personally, the theme of 2021 beauty resolution is ‘back to basic’ - focusing on what’s the most significant to stay healthy and feel beautiful about myself. So if you’re looking for extra tips or feel like renewing your list, check out today’s article and see if you’d like to join us!

Tip 1. Knowledge is power - know EXACTLY what I’m using

New Year usually is associated with hopes and dreams for the uncharted chapters of our lives, yet it reveals a challenge for your skincare routine. Regrettably, the list of skin problems to take care only gets longer. It gets even more tricky when you start juggling more than one expected effect on the labels - moisturizing, whitening, anti-wrinkles and so on - as the passing of time starts tackling multiple weak points of your skin. Just like when you plan a diet routine, keeping the right balance between ingredients and keeping them fresh are the key to maintaining a healthy skin condition. Some ingredients just don’t go together- for instance using exfoliating agents such as AHA or BHA with vitamin C can do more harm than good. Looking out for harmful ingredients is one thing, and avoiding over-applying certain ingredients to prevent possible irritation. Also, beware of the storage condition of your vanity table as well. Use spatulas for jumbo-sized creams to prevent bacterial growth, and check if your products are vulnerable to sunlight or high temperature.

Tip 2. Do not skip your face cleansing routine

Taking a thorough skincare routine everyday is much easier said than done, and so is facial cleansing. Needless to mention, however, skipping makeup cleansing accelerates countless skin troubles. Even when you skip your makeup, it is important to remove excess sebums and pollutants. In retrospect, last year I skipped most of my makeup routines when putting on masks (which was everyday!) and eventually I was shocked to realize that I lost count on how many days I went straight to bed without face wash. Lucky for us, there are many rinse-free face wipe products to save our day. This year’s resolution on face cleansing is simple - just pull a sheet of face wipe of my choice after a long day, wipe for a refreshing and moist finish, and go to bed.

Tip 3. Eat Clean

You are what you eat. It takes two to four weeks for new skin cells to replace the old ones, so foods we eat not only have short-term symptoms on our face, but can also be part of a longer-term composition of our skin. On this note, it’s about time you check if there’s any room of improvements in your diet in case you’ve been a loyal member of a delivery app, or microwave foods. Eating clean does more than exterior changes, but can improve our health by providing our body better building blocks to build our organs, which includes our skin. An easy way to eat healthy is by starting with small resolutions. Start with a simple rule like drinking sparkling water instead of coke, and then gradually add more things on the list. Replacing one meal everyday with a planned diet is one way to start as well.

Tip 4. Start Taking Care of Your Scalp

Regular scalp care is also a task we’d like to recommend adding to this year’s resolution. When it comes to your hair, well, the best offense is a good defense(Yup, not the other way around). Your scalp is part of your skin, and aging scalp may lead to thinning and less hair, which is a red alert for a voluminous hairstyle. However, just like skincare, proper cleansing and nourishing on a regular basis can go a long way. Deep cleansing scalps cleansers with salicylic acids or cooling head spa with menthols helps keep your hair and scalp healthy.

Tip 5. Go Sustainable

Making your beauty routine sustainable, or going green, has been a stepping up for the better for many beauty insiders. The range of ‘green’ varies among many from organic ingredients to bringing reusable bottles, but the general idea is about making an effort of putting the environment first. When it comes to beauty products, choosing products without microbeads or with recycled packaging, or sometimes no packaging at all can be a way to participate in making beauty routines more eco-friendly. Bringing your own reusable bag or bottles instead of using extra plastics could be another one. You can also participate by keeping a better care of your beauty tools as well! Clean and reuse your brushes instead of buying new ones, and use organic cleansers to keep them hygienic can be an easy first step.
